Most of the people arrested in the City of Richmond are first taken to the Lockup facility, where they’re booked in. If a bail bond is given to them, they may be bonded out directly from Lockup. But if they don’t get bonded out after an arbitrary amount of time, they’re be moved to the City Jail.
However, a new Richmond City Jail, which will be more modern and up-to-date, should be opening late in 2014. Once that occurs, both the City Jail and this Richmond City Detention Lockup Jail will be closed down. This updated and modern facility is referred to as the Richmond City Justice Center. Bail bonds will then be executed there.
Like most anything, there are positives and negatives with it. The new facility will be modernized. However, the new jail will house less inmates than the current count of inmates in both the City Jail and Lockup, so overcrowding will likely still be an issue. The city prosecutor has requested that bail be eliminated for all non-violent offenders. I’ve written about this here.
After originally set to open in open in January of 2014, it’s now been pushed it back to the end of 2014.
